History of Pure Pwnage
Pure Pwnage (pronounced "pure ownage") is a Canadian Internet-distributed mockumentary series from ROFLMAO Productions. The fictional series purports to chronicle the life and adventures of Jeremy (played by Jarett Cale), a Canadian and self-proclaimed "pro gamer", through the camera of his brother Kyle (Geoff Lapaire).
| Period | Milestone | Archive context |
|---|---|---|
| May 11, 2004 | First web episode debuts online | Cale and Lapaire filmed Jeremy’s gaming monologue with a borrowed camera; distribution grew via file sharing, forums and word of mouth. |
| 2004–2008 (web series) | 18 web episodes (May 11, 2004 – Aug 23, 2008) | Two web seasons of downloadable episodes, plus shorts, music, forum culture, live screenings and the Gamer Army community. |
| Mar 12 – Apr 30, 2010 | Showcase television adaptation (8×22 min) | Commissioned Aug 6, 2009 by Showcase (Canada). 8-episode half-hour series; premiered Mar 12, 2010, not renewed for S2. Later aired on ABC2 Australia (Oct 4, 2010). |
| 2012 | Feature-film crowdfunding announced | Jarett Cale and Geoff Lapaire launched a campaign to bring the web-series characters to a feature-length film. |
| 2015–2016 | Pure Pwnage: Teh Movie | Feature film screened for fans and released as the next major screen work; winner, Canadian Comedy Award 2016 — Best Feature Film. |
| Archive era | Preservation and renewed interest | Official YouTube uploads, surviving sites, fan collections and the Artchive preserve material from fragile early-web distribution. |
Why the series matters
Pure Pwnage emerged before modern creator platforms were the default for episodic video. Downloadable episodes, live screenings, forum culture and merchandise-supported production make it a useful case study in early independent web television and gaming culture.
